it's truly amazing [19 Dec 2007|04:03pm]
i was sleeping ever-so-soundly last evening when a call came.

it was austin. (oh btw, he can't read this)
it was 1.40am. I was rather appalled that someone is even awake at such an unearthly hour.

i thought it would be a prank, but nevertheless, i answered the call.
it went something like this:

(it was a private no.)
me: hello? who are you?
austin: you guess uh.
me: err, marcus?
austin: no la, i'm austin.
me: oh, so what are you calling me for?
austin: oh, i just called to tell you i'm going overseas very shortly.
me: that's great! which country are you going?
austin: the UK.
me: wow, (i've never been there before). for how long eh?
austin: two years.
me: WHAT?! then your o level results?
austin: that'll be next year
me: oh, so how? why did you tell me?
austin: i am being a gentleman uh.
me: ahah, okay, i have to go sleep already. i'll message you tomorrow.
austin: okay, bye.

i went off to bed feeling very surprised.
i mean, of all people, he chose to tell me. i was just his classmate.
okay. when i woke up this morning, the first thing i did was to message him: hey were you kiddin' to me last night? are you serious that you're going overseas?

his reply came a while after saying: oh no. i'm not. i'm really going there at the end of the year.

**
our conversation went on for another few more smses exchanged.
okay, the reason i typed this was not to publicise him, but it got me thinking.
is singapore's education system such a disaster that quite a number of my friends have chosen this path to go overseas? is it such a flop? is the education system only allowing the best to survive and to thrive? or is it that the education system overseas are more attractive than singapore's? some question may have already been answered by now, but why not choose singapore? why? i mean, surely, sometimes i am awfully disgraced to say that i'm a Singaporean when i'm overseas, but in your own country, you should feel proud of it, right? this post may turn into a propaganda post already. singapore has its ups and downs, pros and cons, but aren't the pros overweighing the cons to a very large extent? we are hoping that we could be the organisers for the 2010 youth olympics, for it to be held in Singapore. i really dont know eh.

perhaps between weijing and austin going overseas, i was more taken-aback when austin told me. perhaps, weijing already told me long ago, so i wasn't that surprised, but austin. he scored 20 points for his prelims, he didn't apply for PAE so he got nowhere, and he said he found a course in UK that he likes. I am all for his ventures overseas, but it really got me thinking, why are some of my friends going away from their home country nowadays..

random thought, i know.
